Dear Daddy: A Poem That Captures a Son’s Love and Gratitude

Dear Daddy

sometimes our mothers get all the praise

Dear Daddy
Dear Daddy

dear daddy,
today i became a father.
it’s a girl.

and now my feet can finally
fit in your shoes.

i can now understand
that glow of excitement
i would have seen
in your eyes
every time you looked
at my sisters.

i felt that way
for my daughter today.

dear daddy,
my son was born today
and a plethora of emotions
course through my veins.

suddenly it dawned
on me that someone will
be watching my every move
the same way i looked at you.

i will not repeat your mistakes
i will not walk
in your missteps
and i will do all the things
you didn't do with me
i told myself
for the umpteenth time.

i will sit and read with him,
i will be there on sports days,
i will attend his cricket matches,
i will play with him in the yard
and will take to exciting places.

dear daddy,
i was in the hospital
to witness the birth
of my second son.

i watched attentively
to the pains of his mother
and i saw his birth smear skin
and heard his cries for the first time.

and suddenly the weight
of fatherhood got a little
heavier amidst the joys and
excitements i felt.

dear daddy,
I’m now experiencing
the judgmental wrath
of my three teenage sons.

i have judged
in the same way
i judged you.

one day their feet
will fit in my shoes too.
